China Export Leading Index Up in April 2016

For April 2016, China's Export Leading Index (ELI) reached 33.8, month-on-month (MOM) up by 2.2 from March, signaling possible ease of export pressure in the second quarter. As revealed by an online questionnaire survey, China's April Export Management Index reached 37.5, up by 1.4 MOM; New Export Order Index rose by 1.6 MOM to 37.3 and Export Managers Confidence Index rose by 2.3 to 42.5, while Export Enterprises Comprehensive Cost Index dropped by 0.8 to 28.3.

1. Rise in the Export Management Indexes of all enterprises: For April, China's large, medium and small enterprises made their Export Management Indexes up by 2.1, 0.7 and 0.3 MOM to 39.6, 35.0 and 35.8 respectively.

2. More enterprises revealing year-on-year (YOY) rise in their new order value: Shown by the online survey for April, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their new order value accounted for 22.4%, more by 0.5 percentage point than March; the enterprises revealing YOY fall in their new order value accounted for 49.1%, less by 2.0 percentage points than March; and those revealing no change therein accounted for 28.5%.

3. More enterprises optimistic about export in next 2-3 months: Shown by the online survey, the enterprises expressing "optimistic" accounted for 23.5%, more by 1.5 percentage points than March; those expressing "not optimistic" accounted for 40.6%, less by 1.9 percentage points than March.

4. More respondents revealing cost rise: Shown by the online survey, the enterprises revealing YOY rise in their export comprehensive cost accounted for 52.3%, more by 0.6 percentage point than March; those revealing YOY cost evenness accounted for 39.3%; and those revealing YOY cost fall accounted for 8.4%.

According to the survey in itemized costs for April, the enterprises revealing increase in their labor cost accounted for 55.3%, less by 0.1 percentage point than March; those revealing increase in their foreign exchange cost accounted for 33.2%, less by 0.3 percentage point than March; those revealing increase in raw material cost accounted for 39.2%, more by 1.4 percentage points than March.
